Crazy Parenting MomentCrazy Parenting Moment

It is precisely right in the middle of that moment. The moment when your child is screaming or has said something your ears are pretending to not hear. The moment that feels like an urgency but has you paralyzed. That moment when your heart is beating angrily and all you want to do is scream. The moment that tests all of your being and makes you want to drown in your desperation.

It is exactly at that moment when you need to remember and apply every single parenting skill you have acquired along the way.

Stop, take a deep breath, count to ten, zoom out, do whatever it takes to make the desperation disappear. This is the only way you will be able to actually hear your child and begin to get to know him.

Reacting to your child and feeling buried in the avalanche of pure impulses are events that could add up to you not really getting to know your child.

You have a choice, you are strong enough to stop and listen so that you can get to know the person in front of you, the individual in the small body that is trying to give you information and clues the best way he or she knows how.

This is when you will gradually be able to respond to their needs effectively and think of longer term, peaceful solutions. This is the road to mindfully peaceful parenting.
